Challenges:

See how you level up against professional engineers, designers, and inventors!

Challenge 1:

How fast can you get your snowmobile to cover 10 feet (3.48 meters)?

First, measure out your 10-foot drag strip, and mark the start and finish lines with some kind of mild tape (like masking tape).

Second, get your stop watch ready. Most smartphones have a stop-watch feature.

Third, run your test! This is a “flying-start” test, meaning that you should start your snowmobile far enough before the start line, so that it’s already up to full speed when crossing the start line.

Bonus question: How fast is your snowmobile going in miles/hr (or km/hr)?

To submit, post a video of your experiment to your favorite video sharing site (i.e. Facebook, Vine, etc.), and email us the link along with your first name, hometown/state, and your course time in seconds. Email submissions to university@myatoms.com.

Challenge 2:

If you start with the 5 chain-compatible gears in your set (2 x 8-tooth, 2 x 16-tooth, and 1 x 24-tooth), how many *unique* gear ratios can you create?
